Kelimutu Lake – A Natural Wonder in Flores

Kelimutu Lake is one of the most breathtaking tourist destinations in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Located at the summit of Mount Kelimutu in Ende Regency, this lake is famous for its three crater lakes that change colors over time.

What Makes Kelimutu Lake Unique?

1. Three Lakes with Different Colors

Kelimutu Lake consists of three crater lakes, each with distinct colors that change due to volcanic activity and mineral content:

  • Tiwu Ata Mbupu → Usually blue or white, believed to be the resting place of the spirits of the elderly.
  • Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai → Often green or turquoise, thought to be the dwelling of the spirits of young people.
  • Tiwu Ata Polo → Can appear red, black, or brown, believed to be where the spirits of those who committed wrongdoings reside.

2. The Mysterious Color-Changing Phenomenon

The lakes’ colors shift periodically, influenced by the chemical reactions between volcanic gases and the minerals in the water. This natural phenomenon makes Kelimutu one of the most unique volcanic lakes in the world.

3. Spectacular Views from the Summit

Mount Kelimutu stands at 1,639 meters above sea level, offering a stunning sunrise view over the colorful lakes, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
